OUR PURPOSE

Give thanks for a little, and you will find a lot.

-WEST AFRICAN PROVERB

By promoting and providing a platform for talented Sierra Leonians, Tenki can fund our maternal health programs, clinics, schools and communities.

  • Mothers

Sierra Leone has one of the highest maternal mortality ratios in the world.[1] We are going to change that.

“Tenki for born” (thank you for giving birth).

This is commonly said by the nurses in Sierra Leone to the patient right after she gives birth. It’s an appreciation, the recognition that pregnancy is a difficult task, arguably a dangerous one here, and we recognize your struggle and your contribution for our community. Tenki for born.

We will help women not only survive childbirth but experience it with the security and grace that’s deserved for bringing life into this world.

  • Children

As with maternal mortality, the infant mortality rate in Sierra Leone was 80.9 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2019. It was 28 deaths per 1,000 in the world. Most of the reasons for this disparity are preventable

Tenki is addressing this primarily by improving the birthing conditions for mothers in Sierra Leone. Additionally, we are focused on ensuring there is clean water and adequate nutrition for children in our community.

  • Communities

In the Gbo chiefdom, Gbaima is the primary village where children are educated and healthcare is received. It serves the 5 surrounding villages. Its only clinic has no running water or electricity and one wing of the primary school has been destroyed by a fire.

Tenki is working closely with the Ministry of Health as well as the Ministry of Education to integrate these essential resources in the clinic and schools as well as expand on the infrastructure.

We are also committed to training the healthcare workers and teachers to provide the most beneficial and evidence-based services as possible.
