MCHTC: Day 2

Day 1 Review

On the second day of the Conference the Champions spent the morning reviewing how to manage post-partum hemorrhage and retained placenta. They also learned a new treatment algorithm called EMOTIVE to help guide their interventions and decision making in an emergency situation.

The Champions and Rising Trainers learned how to apply the Non-Pneumatic Anti-Shock Garment (NASG) when all their treatments are not enough to stop post-partum bleeding.

This compression garment helps to push blood from the legs toward the vital organs preventing organ failure and shock while the mother is transported to a higher level of care.

Final Practice

The Rising Trainers spent the morning teaching the Champions different aspects of the EMOTIVE action plan from Mariama’s class. Maria and Amanda split the trainers into three different rooms where they and the Champions came together in small groups.

In the afternoon, the students will be formally assessed on the three main scenarios they have learned over the past two days. Above you can see them coaching each other to reinforce their learning.

Test Preparations

After lunch, the Rising Trainers were briefed on how to conduct a formal assessment by Maria and given some time to review the grading paperwork.

The Rising Trainers are seen here rehearsing with each other as they read through the scenarios the Champions will be tested on.

Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE)

The Champions need to demonstrate proficiency in a variety of scenarios in order to become certified by the end of the course. If they are successful during the three practical skills assessments then they will have earned their certificate and become eligible to become Rising Trainers in the next session.

The Results Are In!

Matthew is seen here tabulating the results of the Champion’s three skills assessments. Edward is also seen here, he’s the man behind the scenes making many of Tenki’s Sierra Leone logistics happen. We’d like to thank Molli Goetz who is interning with the Healey International Relief Foundation for manually typing in every result from almost 300 paper forms.

We’d like to say Tenki to the Champions who took their OSCEs today. Congratulations to those who passed on their first attempt. We offer hope and encouragement to those who will get another opportunity to perform the tests in the future!
